We have done many projects to our home since buying it 4 years ago, but this brick project to help our front curb appeal may be one of my favorites yet!

I knew I wanted to do something to the brick along our house shortly after we finished replacing our front door, not originally for the look, but due to the draft the old door had. With the bright, slick new door (before/after post here) the red of the brick just seemed off.

Hubby had previously said he wanted to take the brick off completely since it isn’t structural, but doing so would mean having to go through the trouble of matching the siding (although he actually wants to eventually redo the siding… #men ๐Ÿ˜‰

Long story short, the brick still has sat untouched.. I decided since the brick was staying I would go ahead and white wash it to help brighten up the whole front of the house and give it more curb appeal. I chose my favorite white color from Lowe’s Valspar collection – we’ve only used that line and it has worked and held up great!.

Oh, and this was a project I didn’t tell hubby I was doing ๐Ÿ˜‰ He came home with a “what did you do?” smirk on his face. And when the kids asked him what he thought he joked and said he drove past the house because he didn’t recognize it! *the kids thought that was funny!*

White washing can be a little tricky. You are simply adding water to your paint- too little water it still comes out pretty solidly white without much show through. Too much water gives it a transparent look. I had a quart of paint that was about 1/4 used up so I just filled it almost all the way back up with water. Thoroughly, thoroughly mix!

TOP TIPS

  1. Power wash or scrub clean your painting area and let (mostly) dry.
  2. MIX, and mix some more. The water likes to sit on top, so really make sure you mix! Water to paint ratio depends on you, but measuring into a new container before starting with insure your whole project looks the same if you run out of paint or need to take breaks and come back to your project.
  3. Personally I make sure I paint the grout solid white, I just think it looks better and makes any brick red that does show through, pop.
  4. At first it’s easy to stumble and unsure what ‘pattern’ to use, but as I did mine I just realized I was alternating solid white bricks to some that showed the red of natural brick.

I wasn’t originally going to paint the sill above the brick but after finishing all the white wash and stood back. I realized it made it look dingy versus more of an accent that I thought it would be. It didn’t take too much longer to go back and paint.

Are you ready for the side by side brick curb appeal makeover?!?!?! A little paint can do wonders, right?
