Ah, laundry day! It’s necessary, takes all day, but it’s only one day a week! You can read the homemaking schedule introduction HERE. Don’t feel like you need to make ALL the changes at once, that usually doesn’t work. I chose to do this series once a week this month so you don’t feel overwhelmed. This is suppose to help you plan and create a more effective homemaking schedule not make you more frazzled or frustrated.
We are a family of 6 (kids- 7,5,2, 3 months) therefore between all of us, laundry day does tend to take take all day. Starting before breakfast is one way to get the day off to a good start. If I’m really pro active, the night before laundry day the kids will help me gather up the clothes after bathtime to sort clothes 😉
We have large, front load washer and dryer. I’ve used Persil for a few years now and have never had a problem with sensitivity or stain issues. I just bought a large bottle of Ecos and so far we’ve had good success with it also. I always use dryer sheets, but I currently have wool dryer balls in my amazon shopping cart that I’m interested in trying after seeing a few people rave about them.
I do all of our bed sheets every other week so if bedding needs done, I start them first and before breakfast that way they end up done sometime before bedtime. Some days that’s all I’ve managed to get done and that’s okay!
Clothes. One load of whites and a dark load of clothes. (side note : I always do whites on cold- I find it helps to get out stains, but I’ve always been told hot water. I’d love to know if I’m ‘right’ by using cold water?!)
Bathroom towels. This includes bath towels, hand towels, and wash rags. I check the rugs and wash them if needed. We have a washable shower curtain so I check that also and wash if needed. I use hot water on this load and sometimes use white vinegar as a rinse.
Kitchen towels. I’ll talk about this on cleaning day, but since I change rags and towels every night there is enough for a small load using hot water. Don’t forget to check your hot pads and drying mat if you use one!
It seems like a lot, I know. But remember you have lots of downtime in between loads and only takes up one day of your week!
What do my kids (7,5,2) do to help?
- Help take sheets off the beds
- Gather all the clothes and towels and bring to laundry room
- Sort whites and darks and towels into piles
- Hang clothes on hangers, match socks and light folding
- They are responsible for putting their own clothes away
- Fold wash cloths and hand towels
- They also can help change loads over and will take turns pushing the ‘start’ button after I add in soap and change the settings
To keep things fun and encouraging we usually put on music videos. So it’s not uncommon for us to be singing and dancing around the couch while we fold 🙂
Next week I’ll be back talking about Office Day. Feel free to ask questions, make comments, and let me know about your current laundry system is down below in the comments?!
