Spread the love

We started a pizza and movie night tradition and the whole family looks forward to it!

They love chiming in on what kind of flavor combination of pizza we should make, at least one child is in with me while I make the pizza dough, and I know we are making fond memories all around.

Although we sometimes do grab a pizza from somewhere else, we prefer to make it at home. We love to change up the toppings (and sneak in veggies)  and create new ones too:

  • ham, broccoli and cheese hot pockets
(using a garlic/olive oil “sauce” instead of a red sauce)
  • sausage and cheese
  • sautéed Brussel sprouts, chicken, and BBQ (my husband created this combo and, YUM)
  • stuffed crust – my favorite 😉
  • Stromboli-style pizza roll
  • breakfast pizza

Notes: you do not have to use bread flour, regular flour or whole wheat will work. Bread flour does seem to be more ‘flexible.’ I normally add honey, but if I am out I use sugar. You can make this the night before!! After mixing just cover with saran wrap and put it in the fridge. I usually set it out on the counter 30-45 minutes or so before rolling it out. Oh, and we can get 5 individual pizzas or a large 14/16″ (16 with rolling over for stuffed crust)!.

Homemade Pizza Dough

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Course Appetizer
Cuisine American

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 teas active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp honey or sugar
  • 2 teas salt
  • 2 tbsp oil I use olive or avocado
  • 2.5-3.5 cups bread flour regular or whole wheat will work also

Instructions

  • To a mixing bowl add yeast, honey, and warm water. Wait until it starts bubbling before next step (approx. 5-10 minutes).
  • Add oil, salt, and 2 cups of flour. Mix, and gradually add more flour until a dough ball forms. You should be able to touch the dough without it sticking to your hand.
  • Knead for an additional 2-3 minutes. If the dough starts to stick to the sides, it needs more flour, just a tablespoon at a time.
  • Cover with towel and let it rest in a warm, or draft free place. Dough should rise and be doubled within 2 hours. It will take longer to rise in cold conditions.

Notes

To assemble pizza:
After dough has risen, sprinkle some flour on a clean work surface. Roll out the pizza dough to preferred size. Carefully move to pizza pan (or simply roll it on your pan!). Add toppings, and bake in a 450 oven for approx 20 minutes.
