We have never chosen to have a big gender reveal, and with baby number six has been no exception. It has just been my husband and I, or as we had more kids, we included the kids by bringing them to the ultrasound. The difference with this pregnancy because of the Covid precautions, no one but me was allowed in my doctor appointments.
I wanted to come up with a something a little more fun than just coming home and announcing, “it’s a ….” to the family. So, after a couple weeks I came up with this easy, low key gender reveal idea one night while lying in bed trying to fall asleep (thanks pregnancy insomnia).
If you want to WATCH the Gender Reveal Idea — check out my YouTube video below. Or you can keep reading:
With it this being our 6th baby (currently our ratio is 3 boys/2 girls) we don’t really need anything – baby carseat still good, boys and girl clothes, baby carriers, bassinet, blankets etc. Which I’m grateful for, but one thing I have to buy every baby is new spit up rags. Actually, they aren’t spit up rags, they are considered cloth diapers because they are thicker in the middle. In my experience the cloth diaper style spit up rags are more absorbent than using receiving blankets as a spit up rag. The rags I bought and showed in the video are actually not the right kind I like, but these are the ones I like!
What Do You Need?
+ Spit Up Rags, like these, or you could choose to buy cute, baby neutral receiving blankets. Check out this 4 pack of Muslin blankets.
+ A blue and a pink – shirt/pants/outfit of your choice. I bought a 2pack of newborn leggings in blue and pink. I went traditional baby colors for the reveal to make it easy — you don’t want someone unrolling a yellow outfit and them not automatically knowing if you’re having a boy or girl at your gender reveal.
+ Gift bag, optional.
How to:
I took everything with me along with a pair of scissors when I went to the doctor’s office and left it in the car. Proceeded with my ultrasound and appointment like normal. And I left with a HUGE sonograph sheet of photos, the upside of being in a pandemic 😉
When I got back into the car I was able to pretty easily lay the appropriate pants, tri fold the burp cloth over, and roll it up. I folded all the additional clothes the same way. I layered them all into the gift bag and carefully mixed them up — so even I didn’t know who would be the lucky gender reveal “announcer.”
I made sure to tuck the additional sonogram photos and extra baby pants at the bottom of my purse so no one would see when I got home.
Gender Reveal: Reactions
Oh, the kids were so excited. Daddy ushered them all together and I carefully handed out the “rolls.” I had previously explained it all worked, but I reminded them we were going to all count “1-2-3” and then they could unroll. Whoever got the baby pants could yell “it’s a …”
It was kind of funny to watch them all unroll — some unrollled really fast and some took their time, carefully unwrapping… but in the end, Daddy got to tell everyone he was right, again —- it’s another BOY. (That makes boy #4 for us!)
Would I use this reveal idea again? Definitely. It would have been just as fun with 30 people as it was with just the 7 of us.
