I wanted to share my spring garden! We made a last minute decision to do a garden this year and at first, it felt a little overwhelming. That is until, I sat down with a coffee and my garden notebook as I reviewed my notes and past Indiana garden plans. It actually made me a bit giddy to dig back in and research companion planting and think about what vegetables we wished we grew more of and also the pest issues we have had in the past.

Thankfully we were able to jump in head first. I had most of the seeds from previous years, the containers, the heating pads for germinating seedlings; I just needed to buy a bag of soil. We lined up stations with a large paint drop cloth I had and the kids took turns helping fill with dirt, water, write out vegetable tags, and finally planting in preparation to be able to plant outside to start a spring garden.

I only had planned on doing a few small patio containers of herbs and adding flowers to my flower bed this year, but alas. We have a decent sized back yard, but we lack of even a solid amount of part sunshine/full sun with our large mature trees. We jumped in and started seeds anyways and thought about moving the garden to a different section of the yard, but my handy husband decided we would build me a few raised garden beds. This way we could place the raised bed in the sections we know get the most sun.

We did three large, 4 foot by 12 foot long raised garden beds. My husband was very insistent on adding a greenhouse top in one of them. At first I was opposed just buy the fact of the amount of work they took to get together with the way we decided to build them. I already think I want to a greenhouse cover for a second one to be able to maximize our harvest season into fall and possibly winter! I’m getting ahead of myself….

Upon researching about growing in raised beds I came across the Square Garden Method! I have always made sure I practiced companion planting to help with any pest/bug issues which can take a little time to pre-plan but worth it. It also insures that your plants are getting enough nutrients. To also jump start, we went ahead and ordered some soil to fill these large raised beds up! We did a mixture of peat moss and compost.
